Grimm's Fairy Tales
by: Jacob Grimm in Hardcover, 330
Published --1980 by The Easton Press, Norwalk, Connecticut

Grimm's Fairy Tales Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm published their first collection of Kinder-und Hausmarchen (Children and Household Tales) in 1812; a second collection followed in 1814-15. The first English translation of some of the tales was made by Edgar Taylor and published anonymously in 1823 as Grimm's Popular Stories; his second collection, issued in 1826, increased the total to fifty-five. Other nineteenth-century translators were Lucy Crane (Household Stories from the Brothers Grimm) and Margaret Hunt. A complete edition for younger readers was issued by Pantheon Books, New York, in 1944; in 1960 Southern Illinois Press published a selection called German Folk Tales, translated by Magoun and Krappe. A complete collection of over two hundred stories in authoritative translations edited and revised by Louis and Bryna Untermeyer, with illustrations by Lucille Corcos, was issued in 1962 in two volumes (copyright by the George Macy Companies, Inc., New York); it is the basis of the present selection of the most important and popular tales. This Collector's Edition is published in advance reservation exclusively for subscribers to the Easton Press collection The 100 Greatest Books Ever Written.
